If you can’t find it, it’s always in front of you. Henri Cartier Bresson duly noted this at every turn, with every decisive moment. You mustn’t lie in your photographs. You mustn’t lie to your subject. Because whether or not they do not know the minute you capture them, they will find out. Goldin reflects this sentiment time and time again. In Scopophilia, (The Love of Looking) Goldin reveals a canon of intensely personal photographs that at times, makes the viewer wince for her. In a quote taken from the Matthew Marks Gallery, Goldin muses “Desire awoken by images is the project’s true starting point. It is about the idea of taking a picture of a sculpture or a painting in an attempt to bring it to life.”
