Stanley Kubrick, Self-Portrait

This confession is painful: I don’t watch a lot of Stanley Kubrick films. I have not seen “Lolita”. I have not been shocked by “A Clockwork Orange”. I have not been floored by “Full Metal Jacket”. I could not make it all the way through “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

But I have seen “The Shining”. Only once. And I took with it a massive appreciation for setting, choreography of light, and the director as photographer.

Yes, I said it. I’m not a film person. But there are directors. And then there are directors who are directors as photographers. Mr. Kubrick finalizes this arch.

Kubrick is the perfect product of art forcing us to appreciate the journey. He is a product of that journey. He started out first as a jazz drummer, then picked up his father’s camera and began recording his visual journeys….
